One of the largest 10K runs in the United States is fast approaching. Do you need to get your feet moving? The annual Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston takes place on April 1 this year. The run was founded in 1978 and has participants who travel 60 miles or more to be a part of this exciting event. The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, which runs over Cooper River, accounts for 2.5 miles of the run. The main objective is to promote physically active and healthy lifestyles.
With 190 expo booths and a direct economic impact in Charleston of approximately 30 million dollars, the Cooper River Bridge Run is evidently one of the largest events in Charleston. It therefore, attracts a multitude of eager artists each year, who submit designs in the Cooper River Bridge Run Design Contest. Artists make submissions with hopes of winning the cash prize and having their design displayed on all advertisements and swag for the event. The design is typically of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, however, each artist incorporates their own unique perspective in vibrant colors.
This year, the winning artist was Tate Nation, a famous local Charleston artist. He uses multiple layers of acrylics to create paintings which have energy, movement and take on festive themes. The festive aspects of his paintings make his work a perfect choice for an event like the Cooper River Bridge Run. However, this is not Tate’s first run around the mill when it comes to having his art featured at an event. Posters, t-shirts and other promotional materials at events including, the Charleston Marathon and the Old Village Harbor 5K, have displayed Tate’s paintings. His art pieces have also been commissioned by companies such as, the U.S. Postal Service, Coca-Cola and Delta Airlines. Illustrations for more than a dozen books and serving as the Illustrator-in-Residence in Charleston for the Gibbes Museum of Art are also mentionable positions held by Tate.
Tate has made some of his bold compositions into enchanting 550 piece puzzles. These not only challenge logic, but they also activate your creativity while solving them, thanks to the cheerful colors used. Feeling like you need to channel your creative side with a puzzle? We are proud to carry Tate Nation puzzles in our store and online and are excited to see Tate Nation’s artwork displayed around Charleston during the annual run!
